It was simple. Pippa Goldflower had a friend who’s son played the cello. We announced that he would play the cello by candle light at The Last Mile on the night of the 25th anniversary.
He came, he set up his cello, candles were lit, about twelve people gathered, maybe a few more as the playing went on. The young guy with curly hair — just 25, played Bach’s Cello suite Number 2 in D Minor. About as solemn a work as you can get.
He played for a half hour. Then he and anybody who wanted to could stay around and watch some of the celebrations and observances on TV.
He asked me what it was all about — 9/11, that is. He was only five months old when it all happened.
After he packed up his cello and left and the TV was off, P ippa and a few of us just sat around, remembeering.
There was some wind outside.
